Last month, I told you about Thirty Cabins, a new collaborative fiction project I’m starting that seeks to reimagine—and re-inhabit—a century-old book of vacation cabins through short stories. Today, I’m thrilled to announce the complete list of contributors, along with their chosen cabins.
Sunset’s Cabin Plan Book was published in 1918 (my copy, pictured, is from 1938). The book includes plans for 30 vacation cabins, along with some suggestions for how to go about building them. In my revamped version of the book, the 30 cabin plans will be published alongside short stories by some of my favorite writers. The idea is for fiction to inhabit these forgotten cabins and bring them back to life. The zine will be available to purchase in Summer 2026.
In the last few months, I’ve slowly invited writers to contribute to the project, sending out invitations one or two at a time so as to avoid overlap on cabin choices. I assumed I’d invite 30 writers total: 30 cabins, 30 writers, 30 stories — it has a nice ring to it! But I soon learned that one of the cabin plans is actually for 3 cabins — so there will be 28 authors writing about 30 cabins (1 cabin for each author, except for Claire, who has boldly decided to write a story inspired by the 3-cabin plan). So now it’s: 30 cabins, 28 authors, 28 stories. A little unbalanced, sure, but perhaps better suited to the project. These are vacation cabins, after all. Who cares if the floors are a little uneven?
A big reason I wanted to start this project was to find a way to gather some of the fiction writers I’ve come to know and admire in one place. With these writers, I’ve gone on hikes, wandered a haunted mansion, played too many games of pool (poorly), sat on panels, talked at bookstores, and swapped manuscripts. I’ve been moved by their work and buoyed by their support. I couldn’t be happier to bring them together for this project and can’t wait to share their cabin stories with you.
